Teamwork builds success

That most elusive of things! Through every industry, gathering and collection of people there is the potential of greatness, and yet there are also so many things that can stand in the way of achieving this.

Inherently, teams are human and as such are naturally predisposed to selfish need and wants. The individual will only buy in to the greater good when it is of significant benefit to them. So how can a team be truly cohesive?

It is a question that we have built our business upon. Every team can face a challenge of maintaining focus on remaining a team. So let’s start at the beginning.

What is a team?

Essentially, a team is a group of people who are working towards a common mission by performing interdependent tasks. Typically referred to as cogs in the machine, every individual needs to be focussed on ensuring the best outcome of their task to keep the machine working towards its intended purpose.

What can go wrong?

Patrick Lencioni identified the Five dysfunctions of a team; these being:

  • Absence of Trust
  • Fear of Conflict
  • Lack of Commitment
  • Avoidance of Accountability
  • Inattention to Results

The Basis of any team must be trust. Trust that your team mates are working toward the same goals you are, and trust that when your team mate pushes you, it is for the good of the team.

Very often when at work people play the politic role they believe is required rather than being open to what their thoughts truly are. This is counter-productive and undermines any trust being built within the team. In order to evolve, a team must not be afraid to voice their opinions with the others, to share in debate and to buy in to the finished result.

If members of the team have not bought into the goals, mission, methodology that the team is striving for then there is a breakdown in their commitment both to the other members of the team and to the end goal. This needs to be resolved to ensure all team members are “rowing in the same direction”.

Accountability works both ways. You can share in the glory of success through hard work and cohesion, or you can share in the failure. It is therefore essential that each member of the team is not only personally accountable for themselves, but also to aid the team to maintain their focus.

It is easy to get lost in the minutiae of a project or in the daily tasks required each day in the office. However, to be a cohesive team each member must focus on the objectives of the team and how to reach the end goal. Inattention to results will not get you where you want to be.

How to avoid dysfunction

By ensuring these five counterproductive elements are kept out of the team, then success should be within your grasp. Ensuring you have the right people is just the starting point. Each person on the team is there to fulfil a function and should have the best personal qualities to do so, but as this means a lot of different types of people with different working styles in one place, it can be tricky to maintain focus on the greater good.
